A few days ago, the radio host on Marketplace Money asked his guest what his favorite Christmas song is, and the guest responded, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, because of the word little.” It’s so easy to get caught up in the consumerism of Christmas, and little is a word not often used in a positive way this time of year. But celebrating with few material goods just helps you open up to the wonders and gifts already present. This year we had our first Christmas as a family–Mama, Papa and babe–and after a family Christmas Eve gathering at my parents’ house, we woke up at home in the yurt to a blue-sky cold day and celebrated with a morning walk, pulling Waylon in his new sled. I am thankful for the holidays in a new way this year: to create our family’s traditions, to celebrate simply, to open our door to the gift of a winter’s day.

Hi Kathryn – A true barefooter’s message. Enjoying the simple things in life is what it is all about. I run the Barefoot Beginner website and have just made your post our barefoot post of the day. Mostly because of the fantastic barefoot running picture in your header. A real sense of freedom. Hope that is OK – http://www.barefootbeginner.com/barefoot-post-of-the-day/

Thanks, Chris. We are in the middle of winter here in VT, but after looking around your site, it makes me want to go outside barefoot right now! I met my husband in Alaksa in late March, and he was walking around barefoot despite the snow. Thanks for the great inspiration!
best,
Katie
